Lake Monowai

On Sunday night, we couldn't decide where to stay on our way from Invercargill to Te Anau. We eventually headed for a DOC (Department Of Conservation) campsite next to Lake Monowai in Fiordland. Our decision was sweetened somewhat by the fact that we weren't going to have to pay for the campsite; it was listed asa "Basic" campsite with few facitilities and, thus, was free. The list of facilities was indeed short, featuring long drop toilets and an invitation to take water from the lake. We drove down several kilometres of unsealed road to get there and, once we did, we were set upon by ferocious sandflies.

After applying liberal amounts of insect repellant, we emerged from our van. The area was beautiful and not even the fading light and an infestation of annoying insects could spoil it.

In the morning, it was raining heavily so we had a long lie in until it stopped. We then went for a walk up to a lookout point further up the lake:

Sadly, we didn't fancy staying much longer, what with not enjoying being lunch for sandflies. Hopefully we will get to grips with using insect repellent as our trip goes on.
